1. El Morro

   The Castillo San Felipe del Morro, part of the San Juan National Historic Site, about a 20 minute walk from the port. It is one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in Puerto Rico, with grass ramparts and the sea on three sides.

2. Castillo de San Cristobal

   The second great fort of the San Juan National Historic Site, a big stone fortress on the hill above the old city, with tunnels and long views.

3. Paseo de la Princesa

   A tree-lined promenade along the old city wall by the water, near the piers, and an easy first walk with the harbor beside you.

4. The streets of Old San Juan

   Colorful colonial buildings, plazas, cafes and shops within a mile of the piers, most of it flat. Some side streets are cobblestone, so wear comfortable shoes.

5. Paseo del Morro

   A scenic 1.5 mile walk along the outer walls of the old city with views of Old San Juan and the coast, and a good place to see the whole shape of the fortress.

How the light works

The old city is a maze of tall, colored walls, and the light in the narrow streets is beautiful from about 9 to 11 in the morning, when the sun clears the roofs but the shade still holds. On the forts' grass ramparts the midday sun is bright, so use the walls and the sea for backgrounds and put faces in the shade of a tower.

Before you go ashore

You can walk to Old San Juan from Piers 1 to 4, and nearly everything in the district is within a mile of the ships. From the Old San Juan cruise pier, plazas, cafes, shops and landmarks are 5 to 15 minutes on foot, and the port area and main streets are flat and walkable. El Morro is about 20 minutes from the port.
