Mount Roberts Tramway
The lower station is steps from the dock, and in a few minutes the tram lifts you 1,800 feet above the city. From the top you look down on the Gastineau Channel, the ships and the forested peaks.
The Seawalk and the totem poles
A short waterfront stroll from the docks past totem poles, ending at a whale sculpture. It is an easy way to get a picture with the water and the mountains behind you.
Mendenhall Glacier
About 13 miles from downtown, roughly 25 minutes from the cruise docks by car or shuttle, and the most popular and accessible attraction for cruise passengers. Buses and shuttles run from the dock, so it is easy to reach, but it eats most of a short port day.
Whale watching in Auke Bay
Juneau is one of the best places to see humpback whales, and many tours leave from near the cruise docks. Whales are often seen feeding and diving, and now and then slapping their tails.
Downtown Juneau
The State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, the Cultural Arts Park and the historic Red Dog Saloon are all within a 10 to 30 minute stroll of the docks.
How the light works
Southeast Alaska's weather changes by the hour, and a low gray ceiling is more common than a clear day. Use it: gray light flatters faces and makes wet rock and forest glow, so take the people pictures under cloud. If the mountain clears in the morning, ride the tram up first, because clear views do not always last. Carry a lens cloth, because mist and rain get on the phone.
Before you go ashore
The ships dock right downtown, and most of what is above is within a 10 to 30 minute walk. Mendenhall Glacier is the exception, about 13 miles away, so book the shuttle or a tour and keep an eye on the all-aboard time. Summer in Juneau is often wet, so bring a rain layer and a way to keep the phone dry.
