  1. Punda and the colorful buildings

    Willemstad's old town and harbor are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the multicolored Dutch colonial buildings of the Punda district are the picture people come for. Shops and art and crafts stores line the streets behind them.

  2. The Queen Emma Bridge

    A floating pontoon bridge that crosses the harbor, with sweeping views of the city and the water. It swings open to let ships through, so time your walk.

  3. Otrobanda

    The district across the water, with its own colored storefronts, quieter streets and local art, reached over the floating bridge.

  4. Fort Amsterdam

    A Dutch fort built in 1634 that now sits in the middle of the city, with the yellow government buildings inside it.

  5. Mambo Beach and Blue Bay

    Mambo Beach is about 15 minutes by car from the terminal, with restaurants, shops and water sports. Blue Bay is a palm-lined beach with some of the clearest water in the Caribbean, where you can snorkel among coral reefs and turtles.

How the light works

The best hour for the colored waterfront is morning, when the sun lights the facades across the harbor and the water is calm. Later the sun turns the buildings flat and bright. The bridge is best from the middle, looking back at Punda, and the water there gives a soft reflected light on faces.

Before you go ashore

The cruise terminal is in the harbor, and Punda and the Queen Emma Bridge are within walking distance. The floating bridge swings open for passing ships, and the pause can be long, so leave yourself margin for crossing back. The beaches, Mambo Beach and Blue Bay, need a taxi or a tour.
