1. San Miguel and the Plaza del Sol

   Colorful colonial buildings and street murals around the town square, with the seafront a short walk away. Local photo guides suggest golden hour here, so if your ship stays late, this is the place to end the day.

2. The San Miguel seafront

   Caribbean views along the waterfront with a lighthouse in the background. Dusk is the time most guides recommend.

3. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

   A lighthouse perched on a rocky cliff at the southern tip of the island, with mangroves, dunes and a wild, untouched beach. It is a long ride from the piers, so check what time you need to be back before you go.

4. Chankanaab Park

   A clear lagoon, gardens and coral reef, with underwater sculptures. There is an entry fee, and snorkeling is available.

5. El Cielo

   A shallow sandbar you reach only by boat, known for very clear water and starfish resting on the sand. Bring a waterproof case for your phone: the pictures here look best from water level.

How the light works

Cozumel's water is at its clearest when the sun is high, but faces look best in the morning or late afternoon. Take the water and reef pictures in the middle of the day, and the people pictures on the plaza before or after. If you snorkel, ask someone for one photo of you before you get wet, then card the day with it.

Before you go ashore

The three piers are not alike. Punta Langosta is right in town, about a five minute walk from the center. The International Pier and Puerta Maya are a few miles south of town, roughly a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride into San Miguel. Check which one your ship uses, because it decides whether the plaza is your first stop or an afternoon trip.
