  1. The Freedom Trail

    The red-brick trail of historic sites starts at Boston Common, about 1.5 miles from the terminal. Follow it from the Common through to Faneuil Hall for the heart of it.

  2. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market

    About 1.2 miles northwest of the terminal, roughly 20 to 25 minutes on foot along the Rose Kennedy Greenway, with a market hall full of food stalls and street performers.

  3. The Boston Harborwalk

    A waterfront walk with views across the harbor, and a calmer place for a group picture than the crowds at the market.

  4. The North End

    With five hours you can wander into Boston's oldest Italian neighborhood, with narrow streets, bakeries and brick rowhouses.

  5. USS Constitution

    The old warship at the Charlestown Navy Yard is roughly two miles northeast across the harbor, a longer trip that pays off in a striking picture.

How the light works

Boston's brick streets hold the light well: the Freedom Trail is best in the golden hour of the morning, when the sun rakes across the fronts of the old buildings, and shady lanes in the North End are kind to faces at midday. New England weather changes fast, so keep a card idea for a gray day: the harbor under cloud is moody and strong.

Before you board

The terminal is Flynn Cruiseport Boston, commonly called Black Falcon, at 1 Black Falcon Avenue in South Boston. Logan Airport is a ten minute drive. The MBTA Silver Line (SL2) stops near the terminal at Drydock Avenue and connects to South Station for the commuter rail, Amtrak and the Red Line, which is the easiest way downtown if you would rather not take a taxi.
